Our youngest data scientist

Our youngest data scientist has really evolved as an artist since we’ve known her, using the Fathom offices as a sometimes studio when she is not travelling. She is currently experimenting with large-scale figurative works on paper, exploring the tensions between data visualization and young adult folk iconography:

Quidditch Match

Here Aurora demonstrates some foundation tenets of information design, such as: Keep your labels near the data.

Use color or simple forms to distinguish between groups.

Use hierarchy to emphasize the most compelling stories in the data.

And finally, design for interactivity. In this case, the Quidditch scoreboard is updating itself with a charmed piece of chalk!

Founded in 2010 by Ben Fry, Fathom Information Design works with clients to understand complex data through interactive tools and software for mobile devices, the web, and large format installations. Out of its studio in Boston, Fathom partners with Fortune 500s and non-profit organizations across sectors, including health care, education, financial services, media, technology, and consumer products.
